Society of Illustrators / Lamborghini project

This piece will be presented at the Society of Illustrators show coming up in a couple of weeks (May 18th)! RIT’s seniors DanAlsheimer, Jai Kamat, and Zac Rets also got in to this year’s competition. I made this piece in the fall for my advertising Illustration class with Bill Finewood. The following is the process work. Sketches, final drawing, then scanned in to be painted digitally.

The drawing was done using both left and right hand. The clothing was done with my left and the refined detail work (the hands & face) were done with my right hand.

Detail Studies

Practicing detail and rending with oils. Most of the painting was done with my left hand and then the fine detail, and blending was done with my right. I'm slowly learning to incorporate both arms. My right hand is better at fine detail type of work and my left arm is better at the gestural, more confident strokes.

Hope you like it. Thanks for coming by!

Left + Right Handed Painting

I love oils now. The turpentine and linseed oil used to make me sick but now I’m usingWinsor & Newton’ water-based oils. They work just like oils except water is replaced with turpentine. In fact, they ARE regular oils just chemically changed to break down with water. I paint with their “water mixable oil painting medium” to thin the paint out a little. No fast drying mediums since it dries pretty fast anyway. 70% lefty then right hand in the end for details.

The first two figure paintings are master studies based on the drawings of several well know artists. I misplaced their names but I’ll find them and update this soon. The last one was done using a photo reference I found online.

Thanks for stopping by!

Okay, I’m back!

I’ve been focusing most of my time on school-work than anything else. So now that it’s break, I’ll post everything I’ve done so far. My arms have been doing very well these days. My right arm is healing and my left arm is getting better. With the exercises I’ve been given, I’m able to draw for at least 30 minutes with my right arm. My left arm has become very natural to me too-meaning I’m able to paint with it now! The above are from this past summer. Oil, Lefty.

The Lamborghini Gallardo

I'm glad to be back at RIT, especially as a senior.  It's already becoming an unforgeable year.  Just being able to see my friends every day, spend time with my girlfriend, and live with my 'bros' for one more year makes this year the most exciting.  When I think about high school senior year, I don't remember myself working on projects for art class at all.  All I remember are the fencing practices and art club meetings and just having fun.  So I should probably try to do more of that.

My arm hasn't changed but I saw Cortland's very best Dr. David Boyland today.  Without a doubt, he says that all of my arm problems are caused by my lower back weakness and that I can avoid surgery if I can strengthen by back.  Of course that was encouraging so I will be implementing his specific training exercises for the next few weeks.

The following is a product illustration for an advertisement.  This one took a VERY long time, but it taught me a lot about Photoshop painting.  I've always liked long, dragged out, challenging projects.  Those are the ones I improve from the most.

Thanks for dropping by and feel free to leave any comments!

T-shirt Painting

Here's a commission that I've been working on over the last few weeks of summer. It's 100% photoshop painting.  I started making my own brushes and that's helped me paint the way I wanted.  The shield was created using the pen tool.  Thanks Professor Chad Grohman for giving me advise on Photoshop painting.  It helped a lot!

Now it's time to get it printed on the t-shirts.  I hope it comes out good!

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!
